 FREQUENTLY  ASKED  QUESTIONS

WHAT IS RUSH?

Rush is a period of time (usually 1-2 weeks) when we get to know you, and you to get to know us! Our rush events are completely free and non-binding, meaning there are no commitments or promises made during, so don't worry about any kind of obligations. During this time, we hold a mix of events where we try to give you a bigger picture of who we are and what we do. More importantly, it gives you the opportunity to see if you're the right fit for us! Wear what you want, say what you want. Just be yourself!

WHAT IS A BID? HOW DO I GET ONE?

If you like what you saw at rush and want to join, you'll sign up for an interview at the end of rush. This is our final opportunity to really get to know you and for you to understand what we're about. A bid is an invitation for you to participate in our new member process. In order to be eligible for a bid, you must attend a minimum of 3 rush events, 1 General Interest Meeting (GIM), fill out the application given to you at the GIM, and attend interviews. Once you receive a bid, you have 24 hours to tell us whether you accept or decline our invitation for you to take the next step!

What are the requirements to join? Will it affect my GPA?

In order to be eligible to participate in the new member process, you must have a semester GPA of 2.7 and a cumulative GPA of 2.7 and be currently enrolled at UMass Amherst. We place academics first. After all, you are at school to learn!

ABSOLUTELY NOT! You do not have to be Asian. We are an Asian-interest NOT Asian-exclusive sorority. We have many different nationalities represented within Kappas, and as a cultural sorority we encourage diversity and the last thing we would do is discriminate.

BE ASIAN TO JOIN?

What is the New Member Process?

If you accept your bid, we induct you in a formal ceremony with the rest of your new member class. After induction, you become potential new members. There are no specific guidelines on how long the process is, each class is different. The point of the process is to challenge you and teach you more about yourself, your potential line sisters, and the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda.

DO YOU HAZE?

Kappa Phi Lambda has an absolute NO tolerance policy for hazing. Additionally, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst has strict no hazing policies.

What is Sisterhood like?

It's hard to describe sisterhood in just a few sentences. It's being able to sit in a room with 30 girls and laughing and crying at movies together. It's about having someone wake you up for your 8 AM midterm, even after they stayed up helping you study the night before. It's about having someone to rely on regardless of the time or situation. Sisterhood is forever; it's a bond we share because of our experiences together and the mutual respect we have for one another. The best bet is: if you find the values of KPL coincide with your own, then we're probably a good fit for you. To us it's more than a sisterhood, it's home.
